The Indian Head Snowmobile Club was incorporated December 28, 1969. The first president was the late William Brown of Rowe. Charter members include, Jim Rice of Hawley, and the late Romeo Paloetti of Florida.
The Indian Head Club was one of the first clubs in the State to become organized. The club area includes Charlemont, Hawley, Heath, and Rowe. We have been a member of good standing with the Snowmobile Association Mass since 1969. Our current President is Mathew Crowningshield of Heath, elected in 2005. Contact Matt at 337-5566.
The club purchased it's first grooming sled, a 1994 VK-II from Ray's Cycle of Greenfield. This sled is still in use and currently housed in Charlemont. We have since acquired 4 additional sleds. The second a 1996 VK-II and is located in Florida. The third, a 1999 VK-III housed in Hawley, we won this sled in the ACSA raffle. The fourth a 2001 VK-III located in Rowe, and the newest VK addition, a 2002 VK-III located in Heath. Check out the picture gallery for photo's of our two Kubota groomers.
We also bought our first "manufactured" drags in 1994. The drags, still in use are called Frenchie's, named after the builder, Armand (Frenchie) Gauthier. These drags were first discovered at a VAST Annual meeting in Barrie Vermont. Frenchie had a couple of these drags on display, we saw them and it wasn't long before we made our first purchase. Over the years we have purchased about 7 drags from him, the last being the "New Improved Model". Frenchie passed away earlier this year - Snowmobiling lost a shining star with his passing.
We have five Yamaha Vk's. and two track vehicles, Kubota 900 RTV's. The groomers are moved around to cover the grooming needs as conditions change.
We have 11 Frenchie's and they are located in all of the towns. The club also has a rescue sled, located in Charlemont. It is used a couple times a year for rescuing snowmobilers and cross country skiers.
